when reese heard there was going to be a mermaid show at the aquarium in mauville, he'd hesitated for a moment. attending such things always filled him with a longing for his past life, and that nostalgia ached worse than any physical injury he'd endured during his time as a coordinator. he'd participated in a contest in hoenn, sure, but it had been very different from the ones he usually attended back in sinnoh... it was less a performance, and more a challenge.

now they're here, trying to push their way through the throng of people to reach their assigned seat. everyone is standing around chatting, not paying any attention to them, but being near so many people still makes their heart beat fast. they try to make themself as small as possible as they make their way through, hoping nobody notices them.

once he's reached the arena, he flops down into his chair with a sigh. his elbow brushes against somebody else's, and he turns. "s-sorry--!"

they bite their tongue, realizing they sort of actually know the person sitting next to them. it's a small world, isn't it?

A MERMAID SHOW in MAUVILLE CITY was not something Remiel had ever imagined himself attending. The large crowd certainly gave him second thoughts. After all, despite his recent promotion out of the AMNESTY PROGRAM and into the AQUA INITIATIVE, the EX-ADMIN still had to be on the lookout for TEAM ROCKET assassins.[break][break]

But, having been in a position of leadership with that wicked organization, he knew starting something now— and here, of all places— would be foolhardy. Just as he began to settle in his seat a bit more comfortably, however, Remiel jolts into an upright position once more the moment someone bumps into him with their elbow.[break][break]

If this pink-haired lad was a TEAM ROCKET member, Remiel Calcifet certainly didn't recognize him. "I-It's alright," He responds, taking a deep breath before exhaling the tension that had built up in that moment. When he catches a vague feeling of remembrance in the other's eyes, however, the crown prince slightly tilts his head.[break][break]

"Have we... met somewhere, before?"

reese flushes. it's probably for the best if he doesn't remember... reese doesn't want to be memorable these days. he used to have so much confidence and flair for the dramatic, but now whenever he feels eyes on him he sinks into himself. "i, um... have a couple pokemon that used to be yours, i think," he mumbles, embarrassed. "you are remiel calcifet, right?" he keeps his voice low. the calcifets are a family far more famous than reese ever was, and for good reason. he doesn't want anyone overhearing this part.

they lock their fingers together in their lap, staring down steadily. "...an appletun and a cutiefly. they're both doing well." they're not much of a trainer, caring far more about whether their pokemon are happy and healthy than their moveset or how strong they are. maybe that's why they were chosen to care for them...? both of them have rather gentle natures.

Remiel nods when asked about his name, though the confusion does not recede from his expression until the lad mentions the APPLETUN and CUTIEFLY. Only then does a knowing smile spawn at the corner of his lips. "Ah, yes. From my APPLIN ORCHARD. You stopped by one day as part of a tour, didn't you?"[break][break]

With the theater staff still preparing the set onstage, they could rest easy knowing they had some time to talk amidst the din of conversation in the background. Though Remiel did notice his TOTODILE peeking out at him from behind the curtains. "I'm afraid you still have me at a disadvantage, however," The royal continues, offering a handshake. "Please forgive me, but what is your name?"[break][break]

he blinks at the hand offered before it sinks in. "...oh, right! i'm, um... reese rhodes." he takes remiel's hand and shakes it a little woodenly, like he's not used to it. and, well, he isn't used to such formalities, so it's not an exaggeration to say he doesn't have the best handshake in the world. it's a little limp and awkward, but it's kind enough, showing his true nature. "it's nice to meet you for real. i didn't think i'd get a chance to thank you."

reese reaches into a pocket and presses two buttons. their appletun is released onto their lap, the small dragon fitting comfortably enough without blocking reese's view. their cutiefly buzzes around them for a second, then settles on their shoulder. the two pokemon don't realize what's going on until reese speaks again. "they're doing very well," they say. that's when the cutiefly and appletun look over and see remiel.

the effect is instantaneous. the appletun snuffles its way over to remiel, and the cutiefly flies around his head. reese laughs. "see?"

"A pleasure to officially meet you, Reese," The Galarian responds with a smile, brightening even further when he's reunited with the Pokémon from his draciary. "And how could I ever forget these two? They were inseparable."[break][break]

With a chuckle, he reaches over to pick up the APPLETUN and holds it at eye level as he inspects it. The CUTIEFLY, of course, buzzes around it as if wanting to be picked up itself. "They look well cared for to me. I'm happy to see they have a good home with you."[break][break]

Just then, however, the lights in the theater dim as the mermaid show begins. Remiel sits up in his seat a little before setting the Appletun down on his lap for the time being. "I have another Pokémon from my draciary participating in this show," He explains to Reese in a whisper. "We'll see if they recognize him."[break][break]

The red curtains part just then to reveal a dazzling set fashioned to resemble a mermaid's hidden cover. And, at the center, stands a rather mischievous looking TOTODILE with an eyepatch across one eye.[break][break]

reese is almost a little jealous to see how happy his pokemon are right now. it's understandable, though. he'd probably react the same way to seeing an old friend. as the lights dim, he sits at attention as well. there's a tickling on his shoulder as his cutiefly lands on it, watching the stage attentively. he reaches over and scratches its tiny head with a single finger.

then the totodile appears. the effect is instant, as the appletun in remiel's lap perks up and cries out in excitement. reese leans down and whispers "shh" with a finger to his lips, and the appletun once more settles down, feeling chastised. "looks like they do," he says quietly. he can hear peach start to buzz again, though thankfully the cutiefly is quieter than the dragon type on remiel's lap.

they keep their eyes peeled on the stage, waiting to see what happens next.

Remiel brightens at the realization in the Appletun's upturned eyes. Memories of the small Totodile chasing the bushel of Applin around the draciary streak across his mind for a moment before raspy growls fill his ears. The pirate, it seems, has entered a siren's cove in search of treasure.[break][break]

As the play continues, the pirate is soon joined by a trio of sirens that call this place home: played, of course, by a couple of PRIMARINA. He tries to impress them with a WATER GUN, firing it upward like a watery fireworks show. But, alas, it seems they know the real reason why he's here.[break][break]

As they put on evil expressions, however, the fear reflected in his Totodile's eyes seems a little too real. So real, in fact, that the Totodile seems frozen in place now as they dance around him with their fangs bared.[break][break]

"Oh no..."

the play is cute enough that reese smiles throughout the introduction. he can hear the excited murmur of some little kids nearby, who seem to be getting really into the narrative. the totodile makees a perfect pirate despite its small stature, and the primarina play their own roles perfectly. maybe... too perfectly? reese hears remiel murmur beside him, and realizes this isn't part of the play, as remiel's totodile is frozen in place.

they think quickly. "can you sneak in there and use aromatic mist to diffuse the tension?" they whisper to their cutiefly. the little bug buzzes off their shoulder and, quick as a whip, darts towards the stage. it's small enough that the vast majority of the crowd won't even notice it-- they'll only see the faint pink-ish haze that swirls around the totodile before the cutiefly returns to its seat on reese's shoulder.

there. he hopes that was enough to remind the poor thing that this is just a show, and it's not in any real danger.

The anxiety bubbles up in the Totodile's stomach like a bad witch's brew. A lump forms in its throat as it desperately tries to keep itself from, well... hurling. Then, like a gentle embrace, a pleasant AROMATIC MIST enters its nostrils.[break][break]

It blends in well with the show and its mist-makers. The fragrance inspires a soft 'ooo' from the audience, too. Perhaps that is what they imagined sirens to smell like, Remiel thinks. Though he would have guessed brine, wet kelp, and fish.[break][break]

Nevertheless, this subtle act of assistance works, and, rather than expel the water in his throat unceremoniously, Barbatos the Totodile manages to make a show of it. The sirens and audience are awed, the play goes on, and the theatre is filled with raucous applause and cheers afterward.[break][break]

Once it's all over, Remiel invites REESE RHODES backstage so he may rejoin his Totodile. Amidst a congregation of makeup artists, actors, costume folk, and other theater people, Remiel tries his best not to get in the way as Barbatos partakes in the Pokémon catering table with the others.[break][break]

"It was nice running into you today. If you'd ever like to take a personal tour of the museum sometime, please let me know," He adds with a smile as he pulls out a small business card:[break][break]

ah, backstage... it's been some time since reese was behind the scenes like this. he used to get such an adrenaline rush from the sheer chaos of it, but now he mostly just feels like he's in the way. he casts his eyes around, joining remiel in trying not to be a nuisance to the actors and stage crew who are attempting to clean up.

they perk up at remiel's invitation. "really? that would be... much appreciated," they say, not wanting to let on how exciting (and embarrassing) the offer is. they look to where their cutiefly and appletun are enjoying themselves with the other pokemon. "i'm sure they'll love that even more." reese smiles; that's the important part, of course. it means they can rejoin their old comrades, even if only for a few hours... and reese can enjoy the museum, of course. "we'll be sure to visit soon then."

Turning back to Reese, however, the royal continues. "But the draciary is certainly something to behold if I say so myself. I've been warming up to the idea of turning it into a semi-public exhibit, so you'd be more than welcome. How does next Saturday sound to you?"[break][break]

reese takes out his phone. "next saturday... one moment." he taps his way through a couple screens before locating his work schedule for that week. "i have work from 9 to 2 pm. i can be in after that, if that's alright." he'll be a little tired after waiting on people for several hours with only one break in between, but all the same it's exciting to be given an early backstage pass to something. blossom is his only experience with dragon types, and she is admittedly... a bit abnormal, with how slow she is. getting more hands on experience might help in the long run, if he ends up with any other dragon types.

which is an odd thought, since he'd been planning to give up on his career as a contest star entirely. it's already been several years since he performed, but... he keeps collecting more pokemon. he doesn't know what he wants anymore. the spotlight terrifies him, but he craves it, all the same.

"we'll be your trial run," reese jokes before he can get too caught up in his head.

As Reese checks their phone, Remiel compliments his Totodile on a job well done and returns the little reptile to its ball. "That's perfect," He eventually says in response. "That'd be right after their dinner time."[break][break]

If the other wanted further explanation, however, they would receive none as the royal extended a handshake and bid his farewell. "I'll see you then! Wear something light and casual. We keep the temperature rather humid." He smiles.[break][break]
